The new season of American Idol with Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey kicks off this Wednesday. Not only does Keith bring his expertise as a successful singer and entertainer to the judges’ table, but he’s actually been in the contestants’ shoes several times. “I did three different versions of these TV talent shows,” says Keith. “The first one when I was nine it was called Pot of Gold. And then two other ones, one was called Stairway to the Stars and one was called, and I kid you not, it’s called Have a Go Show. So I was on Have a Go Show and bombed dismally. Well I was 12, so what do I care? Scrape off the knees and get back on the horse.” Keith was intrigued by the opportunity to be a judge on American Idol because he says, “I guess at the end of the day I love singers, I love musicians, I love creative people, and I love what this show can do for people that otherwise are trying to find a way in.” Keith says aspiring artists are always trying to find their break or figure out how to get people to listen and he laughs, “This show does it on steroids.” Season 12 of American Idol premieres Wednesday night at 8pm ET/7pm CT on FOX.
