Brantley Gilbert is working on his next album and he says while it won’t be quite as emotionally heavy as his Halfway to Heaven album, it will still tackle some serious situations. He tells Taste of Country it will be “a little more upbeat, but similar… I can’t help it, I pour my heart out when I write so hopefully it will reflect that.” Part of the reason Brantley can get pretty emotional with his writing is because he says when he’s going through a tough situation, “that’s the only way you can kinda cope with it is to write about it. Other situations are better to wait. There’s been other situations where I’m ready to kick someone’s a– — I’ve written a song about that as well,” he laughs. It turns out channeling his emotions into his writing may be the best coping mechanism because he confesses, “I haven’t punched anybody in over a year. I’m on a roll!” Brantley also credits his lack of physical violence with a change in lifestyle. “I’ve got enough people around me now and my whole life situation is a lot different. You know getting out of the club scene and stuff has helped a little bit. And being sober has helped a little bit too, I would imagine.” Brantley quit drinking on December 18, 2011 because he says, “It was a chapter in my life that I’d written. I was just kind of ready to move on to bigger and better things. It was just a part of my life I really didn’t need [in order to be] as productive as I needed to be and to be the man I wanted to be.
