Hunter Hayes Says There’s Always Time for a Good Relationship That’s Working

hunter hayes encoreA lot of artists who are single will tell you there’s no time for love because their time is consumed by their career, but Hunter Hayes is not one of those artists.  He tells The Country Vibe, “Talk about time, I don’t know, there’s always time for that.  There’s always time for a good relationship that’s working.”  For him, it’s a matter of finding the right person.  “I’m searching for that, trying to figure out what that means, trying to figure out what I can contribute,” he says.  “I don’t want to waste anybody’s time and I don’t want to get into a relationship and be just a pain… I want to contribute to a relationship as much as anyone else does, if not more.  And I want it to be mutual and I want it to work.”

Hunter’s first three singles – “Wanted,” “Somebody’s Heartbreak” and “I Want Crazy” have all been about love.  “I’m sort of searching, I’m sort of trying to figure things out.  And to be totally honest, I haven’t figured out a thing yet,” he laughs.  “But I’m still searching and these songs are sort of my way of trying to figure that out.  That’s my way of saying, this is what’s up.”

Meanwhile, Hunter says it’s the search for love that continues to inspire him musically.  More of that inspiration will likely show up on his forthcoming album, Encore, which is a deluxe edition of his debut CD, featuring eight new songs, including duets with pop star Jason Mraz and Pistol Annie‘s Ashley Monroe.  Encore is available now for pre-order here and will be released on June 18th.

Lady Antebellum Scores Third Consecutive #1 All-Genre Album Debut

lady antebellum CDCongratulations to Lady Antebellum whose new album, Golden, has become their third consecutive debut to land at the top of the all-genre Billboard Top 200 chart.  The album sold more than 167,000 copies in its first week of release.  Dave Haywood says when they put Golden together, they weren’t worried about how many songs they wrote verses how many they got from outside writers.  “To us what matters is the song, and we line ‘em all up together and you know, I think the cream rises to the top.”  Sometimes it’s just a matter of which songs fit together best.  For instance, a song on the new album called “It Ain’t Pretty” is one they’ve had since they recorded their  Own the Night album, but it just wasn’t right for that project.  “So, it’s good to have a big pile for us and to have to really sift through and find the best 10,11,12 that we can find,” says Dave.

Look for Lady Antebellum on a special edition of ABC’s 20/20 this Sunday night.   They’ll also be on CBS Sunday night, performing their new single, “Goodbye Town,” as part of ACM Presents: Tim McGraw’s Superstar Summer Night.

Toby Keith Raises A Million More Dollars for OK Kids Korral

Toby Keith and a young patient

Toby Keith and a young patient

Toby Keith hosted his 10th Annual Toby Keith & Friends Golf Classic earlier this month as part of his ongoing efforts to raise the necessary funds to complete the OK Kids Korral, a home for children and their families to stay in while they are undergoing treatment for cancer at The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center and other nearby facilities.  Thanks to the golf classic and incredibly successful live and silent auctions which brought in almost half a million dollars alone, this year’s event raised over one million dollars, with all proceeds going directly to The Toby Keith Foundation’s OK Kids Korral which is scheduled to open in October of this year.

Some of the more unique auction items, which brought in huge dollars, included the chance to have a sandwich named after you added to the menu at the Oklahoma I Love This Bar & Grill, which sold for $10,000, a behind-the-scenes day with Toby’s crew on his upcoming Hammer Down Tour and a CMT and ACM Awards package.

Carrie Underwood is Not a People Person but She’s Not a Sociopath

carrie marie claireCarrie Underwood confesses in the new issue of Marie Claire, “I’m not a mushy person at all.”  She’d rather see a horror flick than a chick flick and she says growing up, “We were never a huggy family or a ‘let’s talk it out’ family.”  She has two sisters, but because they are 10 and 13 years older than her (Carrie readily admits that she was “an accident”) she says, “I have the only-child syndrome going on.  I’m a little more selfish, a little more independent, a little closed.”  She does wish she were softer and able to form relationships better, but she laughs and says, “I’m not a sociopath.”

Besides not really being a people person, according to her mom, Carrie is also a pretty un-phased person when it comes to her celebrity and success.  For instance, her family has a storage unit where they keep some of her career memorabilia and stage clothes but Carrie says, “Maybe my kids will have fun playing dress up in the clothes.  But I can’t see saving the stuff for a museum, some giant monument to my awesomeness. That’s Dolly. That’s Loretta. Not me.”

Some might say she comes by her humility honestly.  Despite all of her success which affords her just about any luxury she might want, her parents still live in the same modest house where she was raised because they won’t let her buy them a new one.  Carrie even says she once got in trouble for buying her dad a $400 generator for Christmas.  “My parents are really great people who want nothing to do with any of this.”  In fact, the last time she brought her tour to Oklahoma her dad didn’t go to the show because it was hunting season.   Carrie jokes, “I’m the black sheep of the family.  The black-crystal sheep. Swarovski.”

You can read more in the June issue of Marie Claire, which features Carrie on the cover, when it hits stands on Tuesday.

Brantley Gilbert Gets Fit with a Mini-Gym on His Bus

Brantley Gilbert

Brantley Gilbert

Brantley Gilbert spends a lot of time on the road and riding on his tour bus but he doesn’t use that as an excuse not to work out.  Instead, he’s created a mini mobile gym on his bus.  “We went and got us some of the adjustable barbells, some Perfect Push-ups and some things like that.  I figured out how to do pull-ups when we do our slide out on the bus.  I think it’s eventually gonna break but it works for right now,” he laughs.  He does lunges to work out his legs, but Brantley admits he has his limits when it comes to working out.  He’s out on the road this summer with Tim McGraw who is a workout fanatic and Brantley says, “I told him I’d lift with him, but as far as cardio and stuff, he’s gonna be on his own.  I smoke, I’ll die.”  But he looks forward to being around Tim because he says, “Working out to me has always been kinda contagious.  If I get started on it, I’m addicted to it so there’s no telling what’s gonna happen there.”

Trace Adkins Says He Is Secure in All His “Hoods”

Trace Adkins

Trace Adkins

Trace Adkins released his new album, Love Will… yesterday, which he says is an entire album full of love songs, but he says it’s not something he purposely set out to do.  He had planned to release the album last fall, but when he got the call to be back on Celebrity Apprentice he knew he wouldn’t be able to do the show and properly promote the album, so they put it on hold.  In the meantime he found three new songs he wanted to put on his album, and when all the decisions were made about which songs to keep and which songs to cut he realized he had 11 love songs.  A guy like Trace would have to be pretty secure with his manhood to release an entire album of love songs and he says, “I’m pretty secure in all hoods.  I’m secure in my neighborhood, my manhood, I’m secure in the hoods.  I’m not worried about it.”  And actually, he has a bit of advice for other guys about his album.  “I’d like to say to all my country brothers out there, don’t think that this is some sappy album, but at the same time I think I have provided you with a useful tool.  If you need to close the deal, I would suggest spending the evening with the lady and put this record on.  And if you can’t close the deal, you should probably think about moving on.  You may have a security problem with your hood.”

In all seriousness, although he didn’t intend to put out an album full of love songs, Trace says it may have been a subconscious thing based on where he is at in life.  “It could be that every man gets to a point in his life where he’s looking mortality in the face and you start thinking that the only thing that even matters is love,” he explains.  “And if it weren’t for love, why would be even bother to get out of the bed in the morning.  I mean, what would be the reason or the motivation to do anything?  If you weren’t being loved or loving then what would be the point?  So, I don’t know, maybe that’s where I’m at.”

Love Will… is available now and it features Trace’s brand new single, a duet with pop singer Colbie Caillat, called “Watch the World End.”

Lee Brice’s Marriage Brings Relief and a Cool New Ring

Lee Brice

Lee Brice

Lee Brice tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend, Sarah Reevely about three and a half weeks ago.  The two have known each other and dated off and on for over a dozen years and they have a three year old son together named Takoda, but even with so much history, Lee says something has changed now that they are officially married.  “After saying ‘I do,’ it was like a relief for me because I had been getting to a point in my life where I was like so ready for that… This last year I’ve just been so anxious… So to know now that we’re here and we’re ready and we can now take steps forward to start this whole new adventure it’s like a relief.  It’s like, ‘Alright, we got here.  Now we can start.  We can really, really start.’”  They were engaged for about 16 months but Lee confesses, “As a man, when you ask a woman to marry you, like I was ready then.  I could have married her the next day and I would have been ready.”

One other thing that has changed for Lee with married life is the ring he now sports on his left hand.  He’s not sure what it’s made of, but it’s a dark metal, like some sort of graphite or titanium and Lee reveals that in a round-about way he had a hand in designing it.  “I got big ‘ol fat, big hands and so I have to wear big rings,” he explains.  “So we went in to look at rings together and these had these kind of bands and I was like, ‘Man, that’s just gonna look so puny on my hand.’  So I said, ‘Can you call the guy that makes these rings and ask if he can make one wider?’  And they said, ‘Well we don’t make them wider.’  And so then I asked them, ‘Can you just put two together?’  So he just put two together to make it wide enough for me and put a couple of little diamonds in there.  So it’s just a black kind of thing and they said it would be tough and rough because I beat stuff up.”

The Henningsens had planned to release their debut album on July 2nd, but instead, in order to more music to fans sooner, they’re going to release a self-titled, four-song EP on May 28th.  “With the single doing so well and the Brad tour underway, we really wanted to be able to have something that we could share with fans right now,” says Clara Henningsen.

The family trio co-wrote all four songs on the EP – “American Beautiful,” “I Miss You,” “To Believe” and “The Color Red” with some of Nashville’s top songwriters.  They’ll continue to work on their debut album, which will be rescheduled for a new release date to be announced.

Thomas Rhett Has Puppy Parenting Problems

Thomas Rhett

Thomas Rhett

Thomas Rhett and his wife Lauren have been married for seven months and they’re not ready for children just yet, but they’re getting plenty of practice with their new puppy that they got right around the time they got married.  Her name is Kona and she’s a Catahoula Leopard Dog, and according to Thomas, “She has been the hardest responsibility of my entire life… It’s really complicated trying to raise a dog to be good.  We’re actually taking her to a 3-week obedience course and we hope that really helps out some of the quirks that we can’t fix on our own.”  Part of the problem is that Thomas is gone a lot since he’s opening for Jason Aldean on his Night Train Tour and he says, “Being on the road, it’s hard to have consistency in training your dog ‘cause I’m hardly ever there.”  Another problem is that his wife Lauren is not a strict disciplinarian.  “Lauren feels so sorry for her when she gets in trouble [so she] doesn’t really discipline her very well, so we’re gonna let someone else do it.”

George Strait Truly Believes in the Title of His New Album, Love Is Everything

george strait CDGeorge Strait is releasing Love Is Everything, his 40th studio album today.  “If you don’t have love, what do you have,” says George.  “I don’t care if have love for your wife, your husband, your children, your dogs or horses, golf clubs, you know, love is what makes the world go round. And I just think it was the perfect title.”

For this new project George not only co-wrote three songs and a fourth one all on his own, but he also co-produced the album.  He says one thing that has changed about making albums is that he’s a lot more comfortable in the studio these days than he was early on in his career.  “It took me a while,” admits George.  “When you go in the studio for the first time with some pretty great players, and it’s pretty intimidating, it was for me anyway. I was nervous, really nervous, and I’m sure it showed. But I think as you continue to make records and stuff, you get a little more comfortable in the studio.”

After 59 #1 hits and 40 studio albums, George doesn’t feel like fans will necessarily gain any new insight about him by listening to the songs on Love Is Everything.  “I’m not sure that they’ll learn anything about me that they don’t already know,” he laughs.  “I’ve been doing this for a long, long time, and 40 records is a lot of records.”  But he does say, “I was talking to Tony Brown, my producer, and we think this is a really, really good record and might be one of my best in a while. I hope [the fans] like it.” Watch and hear George talk about his new album, Love Is Everything below.

Lee Brice celebrated his #1 song, I Drive Your Truck, with a party in Nashville yesterday afternoon with some very special guests.  The song was written by Connie Harrington, Jessi Alexander and Jimmy Yeary, inspired by a story that Connie read about a family who lost their son Jared, who was killed in Afghanistan while trying to save a fellow soldier.  When they asked the dad how he coped with the loss of his son he said he drove his truck.  The writers had never met the family and weren’t sure if they’d ever be able to track them down, but just recently they did.  They called Jared’s father, Paul Monti, and recorded the conversation, which Lee heard later.  When they called they introduced themselves and told Paul about the song they had written.  He was very familiar with the song and told them, “We feel like this song is just right out of our story.”  That’s when they revealed to him, “Well, it is you.  It’s your son.”  Lee says it was such a powerful moment, just to hear the father realize that the song was his story.  The family had connected with the song on such a personal level but they had no idea it was written about them.

Once they were in contact with the family, Lee said they thought it would be so special to fly them to Nashville for the #1 party.  “We got ‘em plane tickets and a hotel and we flew in the parents of Jared, he was the guy that got killed in the song.  He was the guy that they were getting in his truck and driving around, the actual guy and so we’re gonna give them some plaques and let them see how big their story really became.”

Trace Adkins Delivers Variety of Love Songs on New Album, Love Will …

trace adkins 1Love Will …, the new album from Trace Adkins is out today, featuring several guest collaborators, inclluding Colbie Caillat, Exile and the Harlem Gospel Choir.  Colbie joins Trace on his brand new single called “Watch the World End,” while Exile sings with him on a new version of one of their biggest hits, “Kiss You All Over,” and The Harlem Gospel Choir backs Trace on the title track.  The album is full of love songs, but before anyone thinks he’s gone completely soft and sentimental he clarifies, “In my book, ‘Hot Mama’ and ‘Badonkadonk’ are love songs! So don’t start thinking these are all ‘I’ll love you til the end of time’ ballads…but yeah, we’ve got those too.”

It’s been a busy week for Trace, who made it into the finals on Celebrity Apprentice All-Stars Sunday night.  For the final challenge he and Penn Jillette had to create a new ice cream flavor to be sold under Walgreen’s Delish brand.  Trace came up with Maple Macadamia Mash-up, which is available in stores now, and fans can help Trace become the All-Star Celebrity Apprentice by picking up a pint (or several) of his ice cream, because Donald Trump will factor in proceeds from the ice cream sales when choosing a winner for this season of Celebrity Apprentice.  You can find out if Trace is victorious this coming Sunday night on NBC.

Brad Paisley Takes Tour Mates on Field Trip to the Movies

Brad Paisley and Chris Young

Chris Young made a point to get to a theater to see the new Iron Man 3 movie before he hit the road with Brad Paisley on his Beat This Summer Tour because he was sure he wouldn’t have time to see the movie once the tour started.  What he didn’t realize is that Brad likes to set up fun field trips when he’s out on tour for all of the artists and their bands and crews, and this past weekend he rented out an entire theater just outside of Indianapolis and took everyone to see a midnight showing of Iron Man 3 in 3D.  In the past Brad has thrown milkshake parties, taken everyone bowling and set up other fun activities, so there’s no telling what he has planned for Chris, Lee Brice, The Henningsens and everyone who is on the road with him now.

Tomorrow Brad will be a guest on The View and The Late Show with David Letterman to promote his Wheelhouse album and the new tour.

Dierks Bentley will Release Riser, His Most Personal Album to Date, This Fall

dierks bentley CDDierks Bentley has announced his next album that he’ll release this fall will be called Riser.  Dierks wrote and recorded the album in the year following his father’s death and it is described as his most personal to date.  The title comes from a song called “I’m A Riser,” about resilience and determination, not only in his personal life, but also in the highly competitive music industry.  “Life in general has a way of knocking you down,” says Dierks. “It’s different reasons for different folks – could be personal reasons, could be family reasons, your job, drugs, alcohol. That song really applies to anybody that’s lived. There have always been those moments when we have to get back up and get on our feet. They are defining moments…breakthrough moments.”

The recording process for Riser was unique because there was no formula.  Some songs were recorded as live songs with the band playing along while Dierks sang, one was recorded on his tour bus and others were recorded in a bit of a make-shift studio at his producer Ross Copperman’s house, who would often stand next to Dierks in the vocal booth to push him to deliver some of his best and most emotional performances. Riser will be released this fall.  You can get updates on when the first single will be revealed by checking back periodically on Dierks.com.
